“The Two Popes”

“Where was Christ in all this? Was he taking tea in the presidential palace?”

In “The Two Popes,” Pope Francis asks Pope Benedict XVI this question in retrospect of the dark years during Argentina’s Dirty War. Thousands of babies were taken away from their mothers before their mothers got killed; Marxist learnings were burned and countless communist suspects were flown over the Atlantic Ocean. During those years, Pope Francis didn’t publicly speak against the miltary government and reportedly abandoned his fellow priests. However, His Holiness actually did much to protect victims from the junta secretly.

Pope Francis is the first pope from Latin America and His Holiness discountined the Catholic Church’s conservative stance in issues like homosexuality and divorce. “The Two Popes” is definitely a great start to learn more about what His Holiness’ been through. On the other hand, in addition to Spanish the movie contains German, Italian, Latin, and English lines as well. It would be interesting to appreciate the similarity of these languages.
