Mythbusting: Peru

We have earlier received a private message concerning a prospective trip to Peru. A few questions were asked and we think it would be pretty cool to bust some of these stereotypes here.

  1. Do Peruvians ride llamas to school?” ?
Yes, they do. They do ride llamas to school in your fantasy. Although Peru is always associated with a more rural image, most of the residents actually live in urban settings. That being said, they don’t really see llamas often, let alone ride these little animals to school or work. Also, most of them have their own vehicle. They drive to school.
  2. What kinds of tacos can I get in Peru?” ?
You can get some Mexican tacos if you by chance go to a Mexican restaurant. Although Peru and Mexico are both Hispanic countries, they are very different in terms of their dietary styles. Therefore, you aren’t very like to be served with Mexican food there – unless you wanna go all the way to Peru to eat Mexican food.
  3. Why do Peruvians like Chilean pisco so much?” ?
DO NOT EVER SAY THAT TO A PERUVIAN. Indeed, Chile is often known for the pisco, but so as Peru. It is really hard to tell where pisco was exactly originated, but Peruvians are very proud of their homemade pisco. If you know that and deliberately ask a Peruvian why they are serving Chilean pisco, we are gonna feel very sorry for you.
  4. Peruvians eat guinea pigs!” ?
They do. Guinea pigs have long been associated with indigenous South American cultures, and you could still see them in Peruvian menus very often. In case you don’t know what guinea pigs are, they are neither pigs nor mice.
  5. Peruvians are very polite, and will not fight back if I slap them on their face.” ?
Partially correct. Although the middle class would be more inclined to use “Tu,” most of the people in the country would tend to use “Usted” to address other people. When people see each other, they will greet by shaking hands plus either gripping other people’s arm or kissing their cheeks. They also tend to speak very softly. However, if you insult them in public, they aren’t going to let you slide. You are gonna be so dead.
  6. Peruvians always show tourists a wrong direction.” ?
    We will see.
