Every other October in the Tarragona City, Concurs de Castells, one of the most important cultural traditions in Catalonia for more than 200 years, take place attracting tens of thousands of spectators. Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, it has hundreds of participants forming human towers up to 10 stories high, with the strongest men making up the foundation forming the basic of the tower and smaller and smaller men stacking on each other. Usually, a child would be the enxaneta on the top of a castellated wearing a little helmet for safety.
This year Concurs de Castells takes place on October 3 through October 4. Besides the human towers, it features a parade of dance, music, concerts, fireworks, and street performances. In view of the coronavirus pandemic though, crowd control will be in effect.
